The Queen of Nothing

24″ x 36″ | 2014 | Acrylic and pen | NFS

Queen rules what is left of her land, a once great empire reduced to a small sand bar. She senses the approaching rainstorm, soon to engulf her tiny island.

Two sphinx guardians on her throne apprehensively scan the scene,  a tangle of white roses grow around her frame. With all the pomp and circumstance of tradition, and with no one to acknowledge her royalty, the queen contemplates her present circumstance with gentle acceptance. She has the full regalia of authority and power,  a combination of Elizabethan tradition and Thailand’s Great Crown of Victory, but no court, no subjects, no one is there to receive her. The scaffolding of recognition has fallen away and all that is left is the self, still with dignity, yet unmediated.

No person can have any power without the participation of others.  Without that collective participation, they rule none but themselves.
